Professional Care Needed for Safe and Effective Aromatherapy

Essential oils have powerful healing properties and have been used to treat imbalances of the mind, body and spirit for hundreds of years.

In aromatherapy massage, essential oils complement a holistic treatment plan which is unique to each individual client. They are highly concentrated plant oils which have a wide range of healing properties which can boost your mood in a variety of ways including, stress relief, boosting energy, detoxifying, decongesting and uplifting.

Calm and slow movements are used to massage the oils into the skin. This enhances physical and emotional wellbeing by encouraging deep relaxation. They are absorbed into the skin during the massage and reach the internal organs through the body's circulatory system.

The scent of the essential oils is inhaled during the massage and can influence the emotions, hormones and nervous system. Benefits of this include relieving tension and stress, encouraging deep relaxation, stimulating the immune system and improving blood and lymph circulation, boosting energy levels and enhancing overall wellbeing and mental calm.

There is a considerable difference between the essential oils used for aromatherapy massage and the blended oils that are used for treatments in beauty spas and salons. Handling and using the oils requires specialist training as they are highly concentrated and potent. Often, only a few drops are needed to reach the desired effect.

Occasionally, clients need to be aware that the combination of massage and essential oils can be over stimulating. Pregnant women, for example, require specialist massage treatment and should speak to their massage therapist before beginning treatment.

Unfortunately aromatherapy can be seen as a 'lightweight' or just for 'a bit of relaxation and a pamper' and often when offered through beauty salons and spas this is how it is described and advertised. However, essential oils are an excellent treatment for a range of emotional and physical stresses and can calm the mind and boost the body's natural energy sources.

To get the full benefits, these potent oils should be handled carefully and used to enhance a bespoke treatment that focuses on the individual needs of each client. Before beginning treatment ensure that the therapist you have chosen is qualified and experienced in the use of these potent natural extracts and that you have discussed fully with your therapist the symptoms you are experiencing and required relief.

Often after a thorough consultation and depending on the skills and qualifications your selected professional massage therapist has they will combine aromatherapy massage with other massage therapy techniques to create a unique treatment plan for you.

How Ylang Ylang Essential Oil Can Be Used to Experience Your Sensuality and More

Ylang Ylang is the essential oil associated with passionate desire. The sensual feelings the oil arouses swiftly ascend through inhalation to greet the master pituitary gland and enhance romantic ideals. Creating an atmosphere of expectation, sensitivity, and trust can enhance your beliefs about your worthiness of being embraced and loved. This versatile, entrancing oil uplifts you spiritually, calms you yet arouses you. Following are stories of how Martina, Sowei, and Mariah used Ylang Ylang in their lives.

Lovely Martina was an innocent lady, who felt insecure about her attractiveness and expression of her motivations when she met a man who made her feel safe and wanted. Her enthusiasm drifted between her intentions and her past puritanical upbringing. She truly wanted to express her inner nature but held herself back. She heard that Ylang Ylang was historically known in many cultures to ignite sensuality. After experimenting with the oil she allowed herself to enjoy the scent and wore it empowered.

On the other hand, Exotic Sowei comfortably exuded her sensuality and enjoyed the essential oils smell. Even though she was quite passionate in herself and oozed sexuality, she trusted her spiritual instincts and relied on Ylang Ylang to blissfully attune her during her journey to heightened levels of awareness and joy. Her experiences delighted her aroused, enthusiastic pleasure over obtaining enlightened ideas and direction. Sowei often shared her experiences of the oil with her friends and they gratefully and admiringly accepted its uplifting effects for themselves.

While tireless Mariah worked endless hours to keep her business profitable, she enjoyed dressing professionally and wearing high heels. She felt that a woman could accomplish success and be satisfied at the same time. She loved Ylang Ylang's scent and carried it everywhere she went. During her business meetings she only wore a little, unnoticeable amount on her wrists. When she was under pressure she leaned forward placing her chin in the palm of her hand. The scant scent balanced her reactions and strengthened her responses to authoritatively express her decisions.

Ylang Ylang, an exquisitely exotic essential oil has more than emotive, sensual, and spiritual benefits. This soothing, enchanting essence has a serene, relaxing effect that eases your heart. Though it inspires you spiritually and is gratifying its physical action calms your adrenal glands. Could it be this effect that comforts the heart and leads you to make rational decisions? By wearing the essential oil of Ylang Ylang you can create composure under duress, allow yourself to experience your sensuality, and commune with your inner divine nature.

Aromatherapy For Aches And Pains

Lately a lot of clients have complained of aches and pains from back and knee injuries, arthritis, joint pain, overdoing it in the garden, sports or just general twinges here and there, tight shoulders and lower back pain.

A good remedy for all of these is Marjoram oil which I use in a blend with several other oils depending on your temperament. The other oils supplement any other tension you may have in the body or any other issues you may need rectified. If you suffer from any aches or pains or have hurt yourself why not treat it the gentle way with oil? Add some lavender and peppermint to relax and refresh you.

AROMATHERAPY FOR STRESS AND TENSION

Good oils for stress and tension are: Basil, Bergamot, Cedarwood, Chamomile, Clary Sage, Frankincense, Geranium, Lavender, Melissa, Neroli, Orange, Rose, Rosewood and Ylang Ylang. Just a few drops in a burner will set a nice atmosphere and lower your stress levels. Alternatively mix a few drops of each in a base of jojoba, grapeseed or almond oil and use as massage oil or in the bath.

AROMATHERAPY FOR DRY HAIR

An alternative to manufactured shampoos is to start making your own. Buy just the shampoo base which will cost you about $5-$6 for a huge container which will last months. Mix a carrier oil of almond, jojoba or grapeseed (about 50mls) with some Roman chamomile (12 drops), Lavender (8 drops), Rosemary (5 drops), Frankincense (5 drops). Make sure you only buy the natural oils. They cost a bit more but it's worth it. You don't want chemicals in your hair. Shake and add this to the shampoo base and then shake the mixture again. Use this to shampoo as you would any other shop bought shampoos. Do not use anything else on your hair except this for about three months. You will notice a change.

Remember its important with essential oils to not use Neroli or Rosemary if you are pregnant or epileptic. Also do not use Ylang Ylang if you have LOW blood pressure. Less is best when mixing oils and always mix oils in a carrier oil for massaging into hair or skin. Make sure the oils are all natural so no chemicals release into your body. As a rule go by what smells nice to you, and don't mix more than a few oils together at a time.

Smells Can Make Your Memory Better

Some years ago, my parents made a special party for my friends and their parents. It was my fifth birthday and I can still remember the type of fun I had. I was so excited! I received two special gifts from my parents that I absolutely adored; a new wristwatch with a Roy Rogers picture on it and a big bottle of cologne that smelled just like the one my dad used to wear.

After the kids went home, the adults stayed to have their own party and I was able to stay up late for the first time I could remember. But the rule was, "I could be seen but not heard." I was bubbling with excitement about my new gifts and kept asking my mother if I could say something, I wanted everyone to smell my new cologne and hear my watch tick.

She said, "NO!" while repeating the rule, "Kids are to be seen and not heard." I wanted to tell everyone about my new presents, but my mother kept scolding that if I wanted to stay up until 10:00 O' Clock that I wasn't to make a peep. She said, "It's now the adults' time."

Well, I kept bugging her until she agreed that I could say something about my gifts and then I had to go right to bed.

I announced to everyone in my loudest voice. "If you hear anything or smell something, that's ME!" "Smell is a potent wizard that transports us across thousands of miles and all the years we have lived." - Helen Keller

Sometimes we are so wrapped up in our thinking and activity that we have lost touch with our senses. The old factory sense of smelling will bring us quickly back to a moment in time. Remember the smell of cookies baking in the oven around Christmas or the smell of the pine trees? It brings us right back to those childhood memories.

Many of us begin to lose our memory as our senses fade, but it can be recovered. In fact, you may be able to recover some long forgotten memories if you set an intention to be aware of smells. Focus on your nose as it recognizes its sensitivity. In Chinese medicine, the nose is related to the lungs and large intestines and if unbalanced, it will leave you with the feelings of sadness and grief. As you smell more consciously, let go of your judgment of the Aromas.

Don't label smells as either good or bad, simply appreciate them for their individual qualities. Smells can restore old memories. The positive emotions of the lungs are valor and courage. When I first stood up before a large group and started teaching the Recharging Qi Gong Exercises, I first did my deep breathing exercises to open up my lungs to bring in the emotion of courage to move forward.

I encourage you to start every morning with deep breathing like the percussive breathing.

The 36 exercises in the Recharging Qi Gong program will open up your breathing and transform sadness and grief into Valor and Courage. "When you start using the senses you've neglected, your reward is to see the world with completely fresh eyes." (Barbara Sher) You can still get on the program today by ordering now! Essential Oils Have a Powerful Impact on Health

An essential oil is a volatile, aromatic liquid that is generally distilled from the stems, leaves, flowers, roots, bark, or seeds of a plant. Containing the true essence of the plant, these substances are highly concentrated and far more potent than dried herbs.

The science of using essential oils is known as aromatherapy. This science is used for psychological and physical well being.

The origins of aromatherapy date back thousands of years. From documented uses by Napoleon, to references in the Bible, fragrant oils and spices have played a prominent role throughout world history.

Fragrant oils can be used in many different ways. The English model advocates massage by diluting small amounts of the oil in a vegetable oil and massaging the body for the purpose of relaxation and relieving stress. The French model includes both ingestion and undiluted topical application. The French believe that taking the oils internally produces the best results. A common method to ingest the oil is to add a few drops of honey, a piece of bread, or in a small drop of vegetable oil. The German model focuses on inhalation. The effect of fragrance on the sense of smell can exert a strong effect on the brain and limbic system. Research has shown that some essential oils can increase oxygenation and activity in the brain.

By using a combination of these three methods, the use of essential oils can be versatile and powerful. According to the book entitled, "Essential Oils Desk Reference", inhalation of these substances can increase growth hormone secretion, induce weight loss, or balance mood and emotions. Topical applications can produce results with spinal or muscle injuries or defects. "The ability of an essential oil to act both on the mind and the body is what makes them truly unique among natural therapeutic agents." Their fragrance can be very stimulating--both psychologically and physically or calming and relaxing, helping to overcome anxiety or hyperactivity. They may stimulate immune function and regenerate damaged tissue. They may also combat infectious disease by killing viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens.

Today, we still lack permanent solutions for dreaded diseases. such as Ebola virus, AIDS, HIV, hunta virus, and new strains of influenza and tuberculosis. More researchers are undertaking serious research on the use of these plant oils to combat these types of diseases, as well as cancer. Oils containing limonene have been shown to prevent and slow the progression of cancer. Other oils like lavender have been shown to promote the growth of hair and increase the rate of wound healing, They increase the uptake of oxygen and ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the fuel for individual cells.

European scientists have studied their ability to work as natural chelators, binding with heavy metals and petrochemicals and ferrying them out of the body.

Because these aromatic essences are composites of hundreds of different molecules, they can exert many different effects on the body. For example, clove can be both antiseptic and anesthetic, as well as anti-tumoral. Because of their complexity, they do not disturb the body's natural balance.

Although essential oils are generally considered without risk, it is wise to respect their powers and become well versed in their use and safety. Anyone venturing into the world of aromatherapy must use the purest quality available. Inferior or adulterated oils most likely will not produce therapeutic results and may be harmful.

Generally speaking, essential oils that you find in department stores, and even health food stores, are of uncertain quality. When choosing an essential oil, be sure to select a guaranteed, therapeutic grade essential oil, suitable for ingestion. In addition, select and use those essential oils whose scent you find particularly appealing. The whole principle of aromatherapy is that it should be a pleasurable experience. There will generally be more than one oil you can use for a particular purpose, so you should be able to find one you like.

Simply Organic and Natural Perfumes and Fragrances

The sense of smell is one of the strongest and most emotionally impacting senses on the body. Have you ever smelled the sweet smell of home-brewed coffee and immediately had a flashback to a simpler time when your mom would always have a fresh brew ready when you were a kid? The concept applies with almost every smell. Specific aromas trigger various responses from the nervous system and it's because of this effect that people can be defined by their affect on another person's olfactory sense. We as humans are defined by our smells, and since we don't always produce the most pleasant scents, the perfume and cologne businesses are in a constant state of economic equilibrium. However, in a world where social image is key, it is necessary to know the most efficient way to go about using perfumes or colognes. Nowadays, it can be seen that there is an obvious advantage to using much more natural, organic scents, rather than the odd concoctions that can damage and wear down the skin, or fade in the blink of an eye.

Most perfumes use stronger alcohols as a base to make a fragrance much more powerful. However, there is a downside to using these powerful alcohols. The scent tends to fade much quicker, with an average lasting time of around 2 hours. Furthermore, strong alcohols irritate and dry the skin. It would seem, therefore, that paying hundreds of dollars for powerful odors is a waste of money, as it only lasts a mediocre amount of time and damages rather than helps the skin. This is why natural fragrances are beginning to be viewed by many as a larger "bang for your buck".

Natural perfumes use weaker, organic alcohol bases, or no alcohol at all, to create a sweet floral aroma that lasts for a much longer period of time. Jojoba oil is a commonly utilized base that provides use as a moisturizer when used in perfumes. This specific type of oil moistens the skin rather than drying it out like the strong alcohols normally applied. The problem with using non-alcoholic bases like jojoba oil is that it makes it much more difficult to make a powerful enough scent. However, organic oils like the jojoba oil are much less harmful to the skin. Other organic alcohols, like organic grape alcohol, are often used as bases as well because they are solvent extracted and do not harm the environment when gathered. The use of organic grape alcohol allows for a much more unique and exquisite scent while doing minimal irritation to the skin.

Perfume oils have a slight difference in their intended appliance and effect. While the addition of the word "oil" doesn't seem like that big of a change, it can make a significant difference in the usage of the perfume. Many perfume oils are more likely to be applied directly to the skin and utilize actual oils in their usage. Some companies still use alcohol, even in these, to provide the similar effect found in other types of perfumes. However, organic oils like coconut oils and jojoba oils provide use as a moisturizer, as well as an aromatherapy and a scent enhancer. These all natural oils can be applied to the neck, sternum, back of hands, and behind the ears to stimulate your own sense of smell as well as that of those who surround you. Aromatherapy is widely known to relieve stress and help an individual relax, while the scent itself can add to the ambience of any situation.

Organic oils and natural fragrances have their obvious benefits, but can be sometimes difficult to find. The local food market isn't going to be carrying any of these products, and it can be a challenge to find these organic products even in a shopping mall. However, Osmia Organics provides safe, trustworthy, hand made fragrances that contain all the added benefits of utilizing organic fragrances. Stimulate your own senses, as well as the senses of others, by using healthy, environmentally friendly perfumes.

Aromatherapy Essentials Oils

The use of essential oils includes inhaling their scent. Aromatherapy is an established system of caring for the body with herbal and botanical oils. Many times, it is the scent that gives the therapeutic value, and other times it works better by making the skin absorbing the oil. Irrespective of how the oil is absorbed into the body, whether through the skin, the mouth, or the nose, essential oils have long been used to help in healing.

Enjoy the benefits of scent by dropping a few drops of essential oil in your bath, or placing some drops or so in a diffuser, which sits on a socket. When using oil on the surface, it is always a good idea to mix the essential oil with carrier oil such as almond, sesame, or olive. This reduces the impact of the oil a bit, but can also prevent harmful adverse reaction. Before you use these oils, just make sure that you take a patch test. Just apply a tiny amount to the inside of your arm and examine it after 24 hours. In case there is no reaction, you are safe in using the oil elsewhere on the body. Use essential oils sparingly and carefully to achieve the maximum benefit.

Here are some common ailments and suggestions for the use of essential oils in treating them. It would be a good idea to find an aroma therapist to help you; so that you can blend you own mixture and achieve the greatest benefit from them.

Allergies: Mix one drop of cypress and one drop of hyssop in the palm of your hand and then apply the mixture to the back of your tongue every few hours to relieve hay fever symptoms.

Backache: Mix equal parts of blue chamomile; birch; rosemary or eucalyptus; ginger or black pepper; lavender; carrier oil. Rub into the affected area after a hot bath, when muscles are relaxed and pores are open.

Nausea or stomachache: Put two drops peppermint oil on a sugar cube and suck the cube slowly. Or, add a few drops of peppermint oil to hot water and drink as a tea.

Headaches: Peppermint, inhaled directly from the bottle, or rubbed with a little carrier oil under the nose and at the temples can be very soothing for headaches.

Cuts, scrapes & scratches: Lavender oil can be applied undiluted to soothe and help heal minor cuts and abrasions.

Anxiety: Lavender, bergamot, Melissa, geranium, and ylang-ylang are great for calming weary nerves. You can mix three or four together. Add to a bath, use in a scent lamp, or massage into the skin with a carrier oil.

Sleep aids: Marjoram, lavender and ylang-ylang in a warm bath can be soothing before bedtime and aids in sleep.

Colds or flu: Blend three parts ravensare, one part naiouli or eucalyptus, one part lemon, one part rosewood, and one part lavender. Add about 50 drops of this mixture to a diffuser, or add 6-8 drops to a bowl of just boiled water, place a towel over your head, bend over the bowl and inhale.

Stress: Lavender and sage are very relaxing. Place a few drops of each on a tissue and leave on the dashboard so the sun can warm it and diffuse it into the air of the car

Arthritis: Add 10 drops each of rosemary and chamomile to a warm bath and soak for 10 minutes.

There are many other essential oils, for treating everything from acne to diabetes to depression. Most oils are not harmful if inhaled, but care should be taken to apply topically on the skin, and never take any essential oil internally without the advice of a skilled professional.

Use of aromatherapy oils has a history dating over six thousand years back. It began with the Greeks, Egyptians and also the Chinese. The organic essential oils have been used throughout time and world wide. These organic oils are combined in single or mixed combinations with herbs, carrier oils, carbon dioxides, and water to create the final products. There are many different oils that each have unique properties but are used for the purpose of achieving specific results which may be to stimulate as well as enhance proper functioning of the human brain. Organic essential oils have been the best choice for many people who are mainly interested in using the available purist essential oil.

Some of the best examples of the massaging natural oils that are normally used include jojoba, grape seed and almond. Olfacory aromatherapy oils are the largest groups of oils and work through smell. They are ingested through inhaling. It has been noted that once a person inhales it, the smell will be able to unlock memories as well as encourage the human body to change in the most natural way. This is because once the body is exposed to the odour, the smell travels up to the olfactory nerves straight to the part of the brain that mainly affects the part that controls the moods, memory, as well as the learning ability of a person. The smell stimulates the area and the body releases numerous natural hormones and chemicals which make the body feel good and relax.

They are used to relieve stress and help make one relax both in the mind and the body. They help to enhance the circularity system and the immune system as well as the respiratory system. Clinical Controlled Trial: Lavender Essential Oil and Migraine Headache Treatment

In a recent study by Sasannejad P, Saeedi M, Shoeibi A, Gorji A, Abbasi M, Foroughipour M. in the Journal of European Neurology (2012;67(5):288-91. doi: 10.1159/000335249. Epub 2012 Apr 17.) the authors conclude that "inhalation of lavender essential oil may be an effective and safe treatment modality in acute management of migraine headaches". This is one of first of many clinical placebo controlled studies that are revealing the efficacy of aromatherapy in treating common medical conditions.

The last decade has seen a growing awareness and interest in alternative and potentially safer and more natural approaches to many emotionally and physically based problems. Herbal, homeopathic, and other approaches are beginning to be researched in medical schools and helping to provide a more holistic and preventative approach to health care.

My interest in aromatherapy came about through personal experiences a number of years ago with my pets who seem to respond to essential oils rather profoundly. Since then I have been searching for credible research on their clinical efficacy.

I have personally used therapeutic grade Lavender Essential Oil for skin ailments after having read many positive anecdotal reviews on its benefits on helping burn wounds. It has also over the years been applied as an alternative albeit not scientifically proven agent to address such conditions as: anxiety, mood instability, muscle spasms, high blood pressure, bacterial and other infections and pain management.

Migraine headache has been felt to arise from arterial muscular spasm resulting instability in brain blood flow. It has also been thought to, in some cases, have an underlying emotional component as well. In this light, it would appear that Lavender Essential Oil with its spasmolytic (i.e. anti-spasm/relaxing effects on arterial muscles) and its anti-anxiety effects might contribute a new line of treatment for migraine sufferers.

The study noted above, which randomly divided and matched 47 migraine sufferers into 2 groups of cases and controls and compared the efficacy of inhaled Lavender Essential Oil in the case group against inhaled liquid paraffin in the placebo controlled group.

It was found that there was a 71% reduction in migraine headaches in the case group vs. only 47 % response in the placebo controlled group.

Apart from not being a blinded study, it does attempt to carefully and rigorously discern whether inhalation of Lavender Essential Oil has any efficacy in the treatment and amelioration of migraine headaches. Its conclusions reached a statistical significance of 1 in 1000 which makes it's a credible result.
